RP BOE Meeting (December 2, 2008)

All board members were in attendance with the exception of Alex Balaban and Kathy Panetta.

The meeting was open to the public with the board having a closed session regarding Agenda item 1.

Public Portion

  • There was no member of the public who wished to speak.

Agenda Items

  • Items 1 & 2 were moved, voted on, and carried.
  • Items 3 through 11 were moved into discussion.
    • Mr. Ken Iachio asked to have agenda item 11 explained. Superintendent Patrick Spagnoletti explained that paraprofessionals who holds certificates there are times when they are needed in different positions. As the state requires that substitutes need to renew their licenses every five (5) years, obtaining a certificate for different posisions is expensive for them. The certificates currently cost $125 each. As an incentive to keep good paraprofessoinals the Board has agreed to pay for certificate renewals for those paraprofessionals who have been in the district at least three (3) years and have their initial certificates. Mr. Iachio stated that was a good idea to thank and support the paraprofessionals.
    • With regard to item 7, Mr. Spagnoletti wanted to clarify the situation and explain an alternative work schedule. Ms. Christine Dougherty had returned from family leave (having just had a baby) but notified the BOE that she did not want to return full time. She wants to work two days a week – she also did not request health insurance. The remaining three days will be covered by her present substitute, Ms. Christine Beaver, who will be taking health insurance. The matter was discussed and had the support of the teacher’s union.

Items 3 through 11 were voted on and carried.

  • Item 12 was moved for discussion. President Cindea asked to have the trip to Rutgers University clarified. Mr. Spagnoletti stated that Mr. Cicente’s(?) mechanical drawing will be visiting Rutgers for Technology Day. President Cindea asked about the Clark School trip. Mr. Spagnoletti stated that this is a trip, which has been going on for three years where Clark School has a concert and invites 1st and 2nd grade students from Robert Gordon to attend. They pick up the sutdents and drop them off. The item was voted on and carried.
  • Items 13 through 19. Mr. Iachio wanted to make certain that there was no value to the inventory being disposed of in item 19. Mr. Spagnoletti stated that inquiries were made and the items have no value. The items were moved, voted on, and carried, with Mrs. Nancy Kinloch abstaining from agenda item 14.

Committee/Liaison Reports

  • None.

Continuing Business

  • Superintendent Spagnoletti stated that Mrs. Guercio had a resolution that needed to be read on the floor based on closed session discussions. Mrs. Guercio read the resolution:
    • Be it resolved that after convening a residency hearing, Roselle Park Board of Education determined that L.A. and A.A. are not residents of Roselle Park and are thereby not entitled to attend Roselle Park schools.

The resolution was voted on and carried.

New Business

  • Although Mr. Balaban was not present, Mr. Spagnoletti stated that he, Mr. Balaban, asked that due to the economy and his job schedule changing if he could be relieved from being on the Union County Educational Services Committee. He will be unavailable to serve in capacity of liaison since he will not be able to attend. It had been noted a while back that Mrs. Panetta stated that if Mr. Balaban did not or could not serve, she would be able to be the liaison. President Cindea stated she would call Mr.s Panetta tomorrow to discuss that option with her.
  • Mr. Spagnoletti wanted to remind the public that there will be no second meeting in December.

Public Participation

  • There was no member of the public who wished to speak.

Before closing the meeting Mr. Iachio asked the BOE was going to march in the holiday parade this coming Saturday. Mr. Iachio stated he would be marching but in the capacity of representing the Dad’s Club. Mr. Spagnoletti stated he would be at the Community Methodist Church cooking pancakes for the Roselle-Roselle Park Rotary Club. Mr. Iachio invited anyone interested to join him for the parade.

President Cindea wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

THe meeting was adjourned at 7:11 PM.
